Ph.D in Gender Studies
Course Description
This course is prepared for the course- based PhD program in Gender Studies to be operated under Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Tribhuvan University. It has altogether 60 credit hours courses to be completed within the program period and the course offers three semester courses with 30 credit hours. In addition, it consists of a compulsory thesis of 30 credit hours to be submitted at the end of the program.
Objectives
The first objective of this course is to impart students with up-to-date knowledge of the theories of gender to men, women and gender minorities and make them well-informed on feminist methods as well. Along with research, students would have training on feminist research. Course work will enhance their ability to understand current gender issues and exposes them to a comprehensive range. It provides the tools and methods for the analysis of real-world development issues and its relation to gender.
The second objective is to produce skilled and knowledgeable human resource that could contribute in research and policy making required for Nepal’s development needs in relation to gender equality and gender justice.
Admission Criteria
A student holding a Master degree, with at least second division, in any of the following subjects recognized by Tribhuvan University is considered eligible to apply for admission.
- Sociology; Anthropology; Social Work; Nepalese History, Culture and Archaeology; Psychology; history; Home Science; Geography; Economics; Political Science, Rural Development, International Relations, and Development Studies
- Any discipline from faculty of education, management and law
- Any discipline from institute of medicine, engineering, forestry, agriculture and animal science
An applicant seeking admission to PhD in Gender studies must appear in an Entrance Examination conducted by the Office of the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tribhuvan University. The applicant who fails to appear in the Entrance Examination or to obtain a minimum qualifying score will not be given admission. Admission of the students will be based strictly on the merit list and on the enrollment capacity of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Department of Gender studies.
Duration of the Course and Examinations
The duration of the course is of five years with four semesters. There will be an examination at the end of each semester. Eighty percent of the attendance in the class is compulsory for the courses. There will be a viva-voce in Dean’s office after the PhD scholar submits her/ his dissertation for final examination.
